Sourdough French Toast

This Sourdough French Toast is a simple and delicious breakfast made with hearty sourdough bread soaked in a rich cinnamon-vanilla egg mixture and cooked in butter until golden brown. Serve it warm with maple syrup and fresh fruit for an easy weekend breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 6 slices sourdough bread, preferably day-old
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for frying
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Fresh fruit, optional, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl or baking dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of the butter.
  3. Dip each slice of sourdough bread into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Do not soak the bread for too long or it may become too soft.
  4. Place the coated bread slices in the hot skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, adding more butter as needed, until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with the remaining bread slices.
  6. Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup and fresh fruit, if desired.

Notes

  • Day-old sourdough bread works especially well because it absorbs the custard without becoming overly soggy.
  • Use thick-cut sourdough slices for a heartier French toast.
  • For extra cinnamon flavor, add a small pinch of nutmeg to the egg mixture.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Serve with maple syrup, fresh berries, sliced bananas, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings.
  • For a richer flavor, replace part of the milk with heavy cream.
